Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Europe with a depth of 1000m at its thickest point. The Vatnajökull glacier covers an area of at least 8100sq.km with an estimated ice volume of 3300cubic km.
Vatnajökull and its environs were declared a national park in the year 2008. This brought about a merger of two other national parks; Skaftafell and Jökulsárgljúfur to form Vatnajökull Glacier National Park.
Vatnajökull forms 13% of Iceland’s mass.
The research on Vatnajökull glacier commenced in 1934 after eruptions, and there are no other glacier in Iceland that have been researched more widely and thoroughly than Vatnajökull.
There are seven volcanoes situated under Vatnajökull ice cap. Most of these volcanoes are active. These hidden volcanoes include the Mid-Atlantic Ridge plate boundary and Volcanic Fissure Systems which lie on the western part of Vatnajökull
The Bárðarbunga volcanic centre (erupted in 1910) and the Grimsvötn volcanic centre (last erupted in 1996, 1998, 2004, and then 2011). Both lie below Vatnajökull Glacier.
Hekla is the most active volcano together with Grimsvötn volcano.
Kverkfjöll is approximately 1920m high located on the northern edge of Vatnajökull and is Iceland’s second largest volcano. There is a high-temperature area with hot springs, steam blowholes, warm water and mud-holes due to faulty scarp.
Öræfajökull is found at the southeast end of Vatnajökull icecap and its height is 2110m.
Jökulhlaup volcano which happened in 1996 and caused severe property destruction and some fatalities
These are the remarkable events that occurred in the eastern part of Iceland. Many scholars, scientists, and researchers across the globe met in Iceland during the eruption to investigate the events and ramifications of the eruption.
Vatnajökull glacier acts as a case study to be applied to plate tectonics and other fields regarding land behaviour of great importance.
Iceland’s most astounding pinnacle, Peak Hvannadalshnjúkur is in Vatnajökull’s icy mass and rises 2110 meters over Iceland’s south shore.
A standout amongst the most stunning sights of Vatnajökull glacier is the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon.
