Silfra Snorkeling, Volcanoes & Lava Caving – Difficulty ⅖ Rating: Easy
Firstly, the Silfra snorkeling, one of Iceland’s natural wonders, the Silfra fissure presents an opportunity for you to snorkel into clear blue waters. A mind-blowing experience!
Tucked away between two continental plates, the fissure or crack it forms due to volcanic activity. Underground wells then feed the cracks with water, creating the magnificent Silfra snorkeling experience and diving location you are about to enjoy.
Relax as you take in the beauty of the underwater scenery unfolding before you. Vivid shades of blue and green can be seen everywhere you look. There is nothing like this Silfra snorkeling experience, and if you have been snorkeling in other locations you will appreciate the unique beauty of this particular location.
Then, prepare to descend into the black depths of naturally formed lava caves in the Volcanic Reykjanes Geo-park. The cave is full of utterly strange and beautiful rock formations as well as a splattering of amazing colours.
These magnificent products of nature are a marvel to watch, and if you are not afraid of the dark then you will have an awesome time at the Volcanic Reykjanes Geo-park. But wait a minute, the caves are just one-part of the story.
This adventure tour includes a voucher to the Volcano House Exhibit in Reykjavík, where you can learn all about Icelandic geological history and volcanoes.

Snorkelling and caving in stunning places in one day?! Where else can you do that but in beautiful Iceland. We're are going back for sure! The whole family loved this tour.
Please thank Sam at Nature Kicks for us. He recommended this day tour and we were completely overwhelmed by the entire adventure. Both caving and snorkelling part of this tour was brilliant. We also got to jump off cliffs into crystal clear waters. The local guide was very charming too. Thanks again for an excellent adventure.
You will find the answers to some of the commonly asked questions about our caving and Silfra snorkeling tours below.
How Much Time Do We Spend in The Caves?
Unless you are an extreme adventurer, one hour is usually enough, which is why you will spend up to 2 hours in the caves.
Do you Provide any Equipment for the Tour?
Yes, we do, you will be given a safety helmet with headlight as standard.
Should I bring Anything Else?
Caves can be damp or even wet so waterproof clothing is expected. You will also need to keep warm so bring warm outdoor apparel including gloves. Rugged and waterproof hiking shoes are highly advised.
Are there Age, Height & Weight Limits For Participants?
You are never too young to have an adventure. However, we have a minimum age limit of 16 years (max 65 years), minimum height 150cm and weight a minimum of 45kg (max 120kg).
How Tight Are The Spaces In The Caves?
Pretty tight in a few places and you will have to get on all fours to go over a big rock. Other than that you are on your feet the majority of the time.
This is My First Time Snorkeling, Do I Need A Licence?
If you have adventure in your blood then you can come snorkeling with us, no licence required.
How Cold Does The Water Get?
With very little changes occurring at the depths of the fissure, the water temperature is a constant 2°C nearly all year round. The summer sunshine can sometimes bring the temperature up to 4°C for short periods of the year.
You Mention The Silfra Fissure, where is It Located?
Just under an hour’s drive from Reykjavík is the Thingvellir National Park. In the park is located a lava field and this is where Silfra snorkeling takes place.
Do I Have to Bring My Own Snorkeling Equipment?
We’ve got you covered as far as the diving gear is concerned. We will provide you with all the equipment required to enjoy your experience safely and comfortably including thermal suits, neoprene hoods, gloves, and boots. All you will need to bring are suitable under layers and a towel for drying off afterward.
Can You Guarantee I Will Not Get Wet?
We try our very best to make sure everyone stays warm and dry. We have invested in the best dry suits, but they require custom fitting for them to be 100% effective for you and so, a bit of water can get through. These suits are designed to keep you warm even when they get wet. Bringing a set of your thermal gear to wear underneath will ensure you are warm for the duration of the trip.
How Does Visibility Compare to Other Snorkeling Locations?
You can expect visibility distances of between 65 and 85 meters during the summer months when there is vegetation growing. In winter, 100 meters visibility is not uncommon especially, on days when cloud cover is sparse. For freshwater Silfra snorkeling, this is probably the best you could hope for.
How Much Time Do I Get To Enjoy The Underwater Experience?
We allow for up to 1 hour of snorkeling in the Silfra fissure. This is enough time to experience the unique phenomenon that is Silfra.
Our Silfra Snorkeling, Volcanoes & Lava Caving is no doubt one of the most popular tours we run. Thingvellir National Park imposed limits also means places sell out fast. Booking at the earliest opportunity is recommended to avoid disappointment.
If you need glasses to correct eyesight problems, you need to ensure you can snorkel without them, or can wear contact lenses for the day. For snorkeling, comfort goggles are a necessity. Glasses will interfere with the seal around your face and are not allowed when snorkeling.
Ensure you have made the proper arrangements so you can enjoy the wonders of the blue with us on this Silfra Snorkeling, Volcanoes & Lava Caving experience.
You need to be comfortable in water and be able to swim to enjoy the Silfra snorkeling. Be physically fit and ready for an adventure.
