Quad Biking Iceland – The Ultimate Volcanic Wilderness Ride – Trip Difficulty: ⅖ Moderate
The Volcanic Safari Full Day ATV / Quad Biking Iceland Tour begins on the western part of the Reykjanes peninsula, a diverse landscape of volcanic and geothermal activity.
On this tour, we will travel over a multitude of terrains which will give you a feel for the diversity of Iceland’s landscapes and the many adventures that can be experienced!
Our Quad Biking Iceland experience starts at the Old Harbour, a recreational area where you will find the authentic Vikin Maritime Museum and a host of marine activities, such as whale-watching and puffin tours.
The port is also dotted with dramatic shipwrecks and century old foundations that have remained pristine and protected.
Following this, we will ride through rough mountain roads towards Mt Thorbjorn, a free-standing, dormant, hyaloclastite mountain that towers over the Blue Lagoon. It also offers panoramic views over most of the Reykjanes Peninsula on calm days.
We then move on to Eldvörp, a volcanic crater row of scoria cones located northwest of Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula. There is extensive geothermal activity inside and outside of the craters, with steam emanating from about 280 degrees Celsius, and we’ll even take a short hike to one of them to get a closer look.
The area is only known to the locals so, as visitors, it’ll be a precious expedition. Speaking of ‘precious’, if you’re familiar with the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies, entering Eldvörp will actually feel like you’re embarking upon Mordor!
We’ll then ride on this Quad Biking Iceland experience alongside these numerous craters towards the local spring, Gunnuhver, named after a female ghost who had caused a great disturbance there four-hundred years ago.
The area is mounded with mud pools and steam vents which form from where the steam from the sizzling geothermal reservoir water emanates, condensing and mixing with surface water.
Supplementary gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, make the water acidic which consequently causes the the lavish lava rock to turn into clotting clay!
After this, we’ll make our way to the ocean to see the out-of-this world rock formations of Valahnukar. A site where many visitors are left awe-inspired on this Quad Biking Iceland experience.
Some stories say these rocks are a family of trolls while other tales claim they are a group of falcons! You’ll see some remarkable views when the waves break against the rocks, and you’ll also be able to look over to the vibrant, volcanic island, Eldey, which is home to the oldest Lighthouse in Iceland!
Our next escapade on the Quad Biking Iceland experience is through a murky and bumpy lava field, where scenes from The Game of Thrones were shot. Also, towards Sandvík, the black sandy beach famous for being the setting of the Clint Eastwood award winning war film, Flags of our Fathers.
On the beach, there are fantastically fun sand dunes, and you might even catch sight of daring surfers riding the waves.
After this, we’ll make a brief pit-stop at a stony canyon situated between two continental movements, Eurasia and America, for hot chocolate and twisted donuts and a chance to digest all that we have seen so far.
We’ll then make our way back to Grindavik for lunch, possibly to one of the local restaurants for a bit of lobster soup or whatever else tingles your taste buds. The Quad Biking Iceland tour is nothing without a heart-warming spot of Icelandic style lunch!
Following this, we head East to the colourful Krísuvík, the volcanic garden which lies in the middle of the fissure zone on the Mid-Atlantic ridge which criss-crosses Iceland. You’ll witness overwhelming mountain gardens with geothermal steam vents and volcanic craters.
We’ll also pass by the mossy black hills of the highlands, a wilderness uninhabited by humans and laced with luscious lakes, where you can admire the elements of Iceland.
We’ll then travel along a road called “Vigdísarvellir”, which is a great route for scenic sights of Iceland’s natural elements, including the lake “Kleifarvatn” and the thermal area called Seltún, a famous spring area where fumaroles, mud pots, and hot springs have formed in the brightly coloured and green-hued soil.
Sulphur deposits were mined in this area in the 18th and 19th Century, and even Robert Bunsen visited the site in 1845 and proposed a hypothesis on the formation of sulphuric acid in nature. You will also find several maars (low-relief volcanic crater) near the geothermal fields which were created by the explosions of overheated groundwater!
After this Quad Biking Iceland experience, you’ll probably need a bit of respite, so why not simmer down in the refreshing and relax, Blue Lagoon. Here you can have a chat about the extraordinary things you have seen in one day! (Entry to the Blue Lagoon is optional).
Bumping on and over Volcanoes, lava fields, black sandy beaches and even visiting sites where some famous series and films were made! We’re sure that you’ll be telling your friends about all the things you have learnt and explored in one day for many years to come.
